TIL: Most of the sun's rays are actually green. It appears yellow to us because the sun emits rays of all colors, which make white light, but our atmosphere filters out slightly more blue and violet light. : todayilearned

I believe green technology is the only solution to climate change CMV
Main Post:
It seems to me that two methods of dealing with climate change exist: public policy and technology advancement. Public policy advocates for things like regulations and control to slow the emission of CO2 (wet-blanket on the economy approach) while technology advancement promises competitive green energy to do the same. Why not do both? Well a slow and controlled economy produces (typically) less wealthy people who demand green energy AND less technology. Therefore I think pursuing green (or greener) technology is the most prudent solution (considering the long term). CMV
Top Comment: Well there's also the option of nuclear or cold fusion technology then just totally ignoring how much energy things use. That comes with a wack of problems of its own usually but if they get cold fusion figured out it should be pretty safe and very clean?

"It's green" appears twice in the whole of Star Trek Canon
Main Post:
Once in TOS when the aliens from Andromeda take control of the Enterprise, Scotty is getting the alien drunk and finds a mysterious green bottle of booze.
It happens in TNG, when Scotty has been rescued from the Jenolan, Data finds a bottle of something behind the bar, and when Scotty asks what it is, Data replies "It is green".
Top Comment: Yes, but that's what makes it the perfect callback reference. A fan of TOS couldn't possibly miss it, but it's not at all out of place in the context it's used, and not overdone ruining the amusement.

Any engineers out there working in green technology fields or work related to renewable energy?
Main Post:
Sophomore undergrad ME major here who's looking to work in a green tech or renewable energy field in the future (solar energy, wind turbines etc.) Any advice on major/general topics for classes that would be best for getting into this field? What are employers in this field looking for?
Top Comment:
The field is as versatile as any other. Fluid flow from the interaction of the air with the turbine blades, to modelling of areas to assess placement. Structural for obvious design considerations. Manufacturing for actually making the things.
I know this isn't what you're looking for, but pick the subjects/topics you're interested in and go with that. Your interest and passion for renewable energy fields is as valuable as your actual skills, but don't waste your time doing subjects you're not interested in purely for an industry. Those fundamentals are harder to escape than an industry swap.
Career opportunities in green tech?
Main Post:
Hi everyone!
I am half way through a backend program at Turing School of Software and Design and am starting to consider what to focus on in the job hunt.
I would love to have a career that involves something positive for the environment, especially when it comes to environmental science, renewable energy, or anything similar. I have a bachelor's degree in integrative health care, so that industry is an interest of mine as well. However, I am not familiar enough with the diverse workforce of software engineering to know what kinds of places I should look into, or what I can expect to be available to an entry-level student when it comes to these areas of interest.
Anyone here have company recommendations or resources that one new to the field like me should look into that I could easily miss? For what it's worth, I'm in Denver, CO.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure if this counts but if you want to broaden your search you could check which companies are part of 1% for the planet and apply to those.
